The Stress Self Assessment Focused On My Stressors Essay

The Nature of Stress self-assessment focused on my stressors. I learned that most of my stressors were chronic; mainly dealing with school and socializing. The stressors were categorized as mental and spiritual, although I did notice missing family and friends could fall under spiritual and emotional. Another thing I learned was most of my stressors were caused from my move to Bismarck. For example, living far from home, new job, and not having close friendships. This form of assessment didn’t work for me because I found I was focusing on the negative and felt more stressed after seeing all my stressors in a list. The Signs of Stress assessment focused on my personal symptoms of stress. I previously noticed these happened, but I never drew the connection to stress. For example, I normally have very clear skin, but every once in awhile I’ll break out. The effects of stress are physiological. Now that I have a list of my signs of stress, I am able to recognize when situat ions like break outs happen what is really going on. The Personality Survey was to determine if I had a hardi personality. Before starting the assessment, I predicted I would be classified with the hardi personality because I handle stress well. Priestleys play apart from the Inspector and Edna played a part in Eva Smith/Daisy Rentons life and contributed to her death. Some characters played larger parts in the life of Eva Smith than others. For example, Gerald played a larger part in the life of Eva Smith than Mr Birling because he knew her personally for a much longer period of time. Even so, I believe that the parts the characters played in Eva Smiths life were just as important as each other. This is because all of their actions formed a chain of events. Like a chain reaction each part one character played put into motion the part another character would play. So without one single contribution from a character the whole chain would breakdown. For example, if Mr Birling hadnt have sacked Eva Smith, then she wouldnt have looked for a job in the clothes shop. This then would mean of course that Sheila would never have seen Eva Smith and got her the sack. In this piece of coursework I will look at the parts Gerald and Sheila played in the life and death of Eva Smith. The part Sheila played as I have already described was an equally important role than any other of the characters in J. B. Priestleys play. To understand fully the effect Sheilas actions had on the life of Eva Smith, we have to look at what position Eva Smiths life was in at the time. Working in the clothes shop Milwards, would have been a great position for Eva Smith to be in. The work would have been less taxing on the body and in general a lot more pleasant than working in a factory. I believe that the wage Eva Smith would have received would have been greater than that of the factory. This is because the job required the worker to be clean and healthy. Something I believe would not have been possible on a factorys wage. Sheilas own reaction shows how much of a good job it would have been. Yes, she was lucky to get taken on at Milwardsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ P. 20, Act One. From this I think its safe to say that Sheilas actions would have had a massive impact on the life of Eva Smith. P. 19, Act One. Throughout the play we see many different sides of Sheilas personality. At the start of the play she acts normal for a girl who has recently got engaged. She is playful, excited but also selfish as she is enjoying the attention the news of the engagement brings her. She uses words like mummy. This shows us how childish and protected she is even though she is around twenty. We see another normal side of her when she finds out about the death of Eva Smith. She seems upset and interested in the girls death even though she has no idea of her involvement. Later on in the play we see a complete reversal of the personality she had showed before. She acts like an adult taking responsibility for her part in the death of Eva Smith. However the part she played in Eva Smiths life shows us how she can easily become jealous and take out her general anger on someone innocent. This shows us how self-centred and vain she is. On the other hand Gerald played a different part in the life of Eva Smith. Although by the time Gerald met her she was using a different name, Daisy Renton. B Priestley shows the attitude of the upper class of the time through Mr Birling. He adopts the attitude of Im alright Jack. His attitude is shown at the beginning of the play on page ten. He is giving advice to Eric and Gerald on how they should go about their lives. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦that a man has to look after his own business and look after himself and his ownà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ This shows that he is not willing to take responsibility for others. Mr Birling is not prepared to help out his workers when they ask for more money. He is a rich man. He has a maid, Edna. The scene is set with champagne glasses, a decanter of port and cigarettes. The characters are wearing smart evening dress. These are all things you would associate rich people of the time with. Mr Birling was allowed to make so much money as a result of cheap labour. He took advantage of the fact that unemployment was high at the time and exploited his workers need for a job. It is a fact that many factory owners did exactly the same thing and I believe the play shows how wrong this really was. This gives the audience a very strong social message. We are shown how all of the characters abused their social standings and power to get what they wanted. The play has the effect of making its audience look inside themselves to see if they are in anyway like Mr Birling or the other characters. The Inspector plays a very important part in the play. You could say that he is the key to the whole thing as the play couldnt go on without him. Therefore he is the most important character in the play. I believe J. B Priestley makes the Inspector the focal point of the whole play. His achieves this by giving him certain actions and in the things he says. For example, on page twelve, act one the Inspector dominates what is being said, cutting through massively Ive been round to the room she had, and shed left a letter and a sort of diaryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ He interrupts Mr Birling who up to now appeared to be the dominating figure in the room. By doing this he has stamped his authority on Mr Birling and showed that he cant be intimidated by his social power. This is also an example of the way the Inspector goes about his questioning. He is very good at extracting information from the rest of the characters. He manipulates the conversation in-order to find out only the information he wishes to find out. Here Mr Birling would have gone on to say something that doesnt interest the Inspector and so he stops him before he has chance to do so. The Inspector also allows other characters to put pressure on the one undergoing questioning. For example he allows Sheila to apply pressure onto Gerald while he is being questioned. When the Inspector asks Gerald if he was In love with her. Sheila applies more pressure onto Gerald answer by saying, Just what I was going to ask! P. 37, Act Two. The Inspector isnt there to convict any of the characters. He is there simply to make them realise what they have done. Perhaps in the hope that they will change their ways. This is something I have discussed as one of the themes of the play. That people realise their mistakes and changed for the better. The First and Second World Wars are examples of not doing this. He analyses likely symbols in the book, which gave me more of an insight and a new perspective that helped me view the main characters and their transformation in a different setting. Selfishness and hypocrisy mark their victims with false shells and distorted personalities and lead them to believe in their superiority over mankind. This renders them incapable of experiencing anything real and leave them fumbling after false truths, while taking advantage of the pure at heart. This seems to be the essence of what Gold wants to communicate with his analysis. Pecksniff is the hypocrite who shuns no one when it comes to him making a profit. Unconscious of his inability to self-reflect or perhaps proud of his exalted virtuousness, Pecksniff is the epitome of righteousness, as Gold explains; he is in the book to display the extreme and helps clarify America's role as a "national Pecksniff". Through him do Thomas Pinch and Martin Chuzzlewit the Elder finally open their eyes to their own lesser vices; Pinch's na?ve behavior changes after confronted with the real, or should I say false shell of, Pecksniff, while Chuzzlewit Sr. sees parts of himself in Pecksniff and is at the same time reminded of true virtue, honesty and human interdependence through Thomas Pinch. Gold goes thoroughly into an analysis of the paradigm between Jonas and the Book of Jonah, both characters fleeing from their own selves; it isn't until they accept the wale, as Sairey Gamp puts it, signifying Jonah's return to God in the whale's stomach, that they can reach self-fulfillment. Jonas's"god" is Tigg Montague and their travel is in a coach going to Salisbury. It is here Jonas becomes aware his own self and the path which he has to follow, which ends up with the deaths of Montague and himself. Gold's analysis recognizes the main aspects of the book and his variety of quotes from other analysts/authors supporting his hypothesis (if he was ever unsure!), convinces me of the symbolism present in Martin Chuzzlewit and the very apparent human failings in some of the characters. She addresses the many steps she goes through to come up with her final â€Å"polished† works. First, Lamott starts off with a brief summary of what she believes in, she also gives a short description of her thoughts and personal life. Lamott then addresses to what I believe is her thesis and is finally ready to talk about her â€Å"Shitty† first drafts. At first she writes what she calls a â€Å"child’s draft† which is her first 5 pages of just brainstorming. In this â€Å"child’s draft† of just visions and some what nonsense, she does this in thought that no one is going to see this first draft anyway so she gives herself the ability to write anything that comes to mind. However, as a writer she is always nervous that someone will get a hold of her first draft before she is able to revise it. She gives distinct visuals of her process, â€Å"It was almost just typing, just making my fingers move. And the writing would be terrible. † After crossing out lines and phrases that she could live without, she would continue on to rewriting a second draft. Even though Lamott’s process of writing and revising seems crazy, I definitely agree with her and say that writing is an exhausting process. She mentions thoughts of suicide and panic, which is a coincidence because I feel the same way when writing a paper. I feel that rough drafts are completely necessary, reason being, real writers always have room for improvement and growth. Therefore, a first drafts give writers the opportunity to see overlooked mistakes and correct them before handing in the polished final draft. My first drafts tend to be well written simply because I am a perfectionist. There is always room to grow, that I believe is the exception for a â€Å"shitty first draft†.

The goal of this paper is to provide a semiotic analysis of advertisements in the fields of business and politics. In the business section, logos of famous companies such as Adidas and Dior will be discussed. Then, in the political section, we will take a look at the recent presidential election in Iran and parliament election in Sweden. Additionally, Therone is living in the USA but she is originally from South Africa which is a symbol of an exotic land and precious stones such as diamonds. Also, Charilze Theron age might be related to the idea that this kind of perfume suits women not girls, experts in perfume industry also suggest that ideal age for this perfume is between 30 and 45 years old. Lastly, the bottle of perfume represents all the aspects that were mentioned above. The bottle looks like a woman and also you can find the gold and white colors which are related to what Throne says during the advertisement. Then, the alarm goes off and two red handles are hung from the ceiling, on one of them it is written immigration and the other one pensions. After that there is an old lady who is using a walker in doing her best to get to the handle, while a group of women wearing black veil and borqa are running faster than her to get to the other handle. The first thing that draws attention to itself in this ad is the dark setting that is symbol of bad situation in Sweden. And, the red handles along with the siren sound means that there is emergency situation and something had to be done immediately. Women who are wearing veil and borqa symbolize all the immigrants in Sweden, particularly Muslims. The old lady in the clip symbolizes the hard working Swedes who have paid their taxes and when they want to get their pension now they fall behind because of the immigrants. In this ad the advertiser focused more on social codes (bodily codes and commodity codes) which exist in Sweden. Nevertheless, the discrimination factor is very vivid the distance between the handles and the space between the old Swedish woman and the women who are dressed in black. The general message of this ad is to say, stop immigration or it will be at the expense of the real Swedes. Conclusion To sum up, we are living in a world full of signs and codes.
